Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) include biofuels (advanced and others), synthetic aviation fuels (RFNBO: renewable fuels of non-biological origin), synthetic low carbon fuels and recycled carbon aviation fuels (RCF).
Under the EU ETS, SAF are referred to as alternative aviation fuels and can be zero-rated, meaning their use lowers an aircraft operators surrender obligation. Additionally, if these alternative aviation fuels meet the requirements of an eligible aviation fuel, these fuels can benefit from FEETS (Fuels Eligible for ETS) support. Under ICAO’s CORSIA scheme, the use of SAF may reduce CO2 offsetting obligations, if these fuels qualify as CORSIA eligible fuels.
