Holding of units

The CO2 Registry contains various types of units and various account types. Not all units may be held on any account type. See below for the key regulations on holding units.

Regulations

  • European Union Allowances (EUAs) may be held on any account type, except a Kyoto account (KA);
  • Aviation European Union Allowances (AEUAs) may be held on any account type, except an operator holding account (OHA) or a Kyoto account (KA);
  • Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) and Emission Reduction Units (ERUs) valid for use in the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) may be held on any account type;
  • CERs and ERUs not valid for use in the EU ETS may only be held on Kyoto accounts.

* CERs from the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) registry may only be directly supplied to a KA. Only CERs valid for use in the EU ETS can then be transferred to any account type.

The above regulations have consequences for the transfer of units. Only units that are valid for certain account types may be transferred to those accounts. EUAs, for example, may only be transferred to an (A)OHA, PHA or TA, but not to a KA.
